The Corvallis Parks and Recreation Family Assistance Scholarship Program
The Corvallis Parks and Recreation Family Assistance Scholarship Program helps over 1,000 families gain access to enriching and lifesaving programs annually including swimming lessons, youth sports, the arts, and more. The program provides a $150 financial scholarship for individuals whose income qualifies at less than 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. Last year over $138,000 in scholarships were used by program participants which includes over 1,200 sessions of swimming lessons and over 500 summer pool memberships. These programs provide low-income children the opportunity to learn basic swimming and water safety skills that are often unavailable to individuals of lower socioeconomic standing. With over 3,500 drowning deaths in the United States annually, community investment in water safety skills for these at-risk children can literally save a life.
In addition, Corvallis Parks and Recreation programming can help battle the national obesity epidemic which has serious affects on personal and community health including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, joint problems, increased risk of cancer and more. By providing access to programs that encourage healthy living our community can help lower-income individuals live healthier, happier, and more productive lives.
The scholarship program is funded through donations, fundraising, and tax dollars with the utilization of the program increasing each year since 2011. With the program on-pace to grow substantially again this year, the awarded scholarships will be capped for the first time. Fundraising efforts such as the Corvallis Turkey Trot and the Heart of the Valley Triathlon are critical to help sustain the program into the future. Thank you for supporting our community!
